DIY Felt Bauble Craft

Bring a touch of handmade charm to your Christmas decorations with these easy felt baubles! This craft is perfect for parents and children to enjoy together, creating personal, festive decorations for your tree or thoughtful gifts for loved ones. Follow these simple steps to make your own unique baubles and share a special moment crafting as a family.

We love a craft activity that we can do together as a family. For me personally it's what I love most about December. Decorating the house, being creative and enjoy the magic of Christmas. It's a busy time for me as a photographer but especially since having a child I always try to carve out time and make Christmas preparations special and fun! I hope you'll enjoy this activity as much as we did!

You'll need:

  • Felt sheets

  • Pieces of ribbon about 10 cm long

  • Gold acrylic paint or fabric paint

  • Paint brush

  • Wadding (or cotton wool for filling)

  • Pen

  • Scissors

  • Needle and thread

  • Bauble shape templates (or your own designs)

How to:

Pick out your favourite bauble shapes. Use our template or let the kids draw their own! Trace the shapes onto the felt sheets and carefully cut them out. Each bauble will need two identical pieces.

Use gold paint to add festive patterns like dots, stripes, or snowflakes to one side of each bauble shape. Let the kids get creative with their designs - they can add their unique touch! Leave the pieces to dry completely before moving to the next step.

Pair two matching shapes together. Begin sewing them around the edge with a needle and thread, leaving a small gap at the top. This is a great moment for older children to practice sewing skills, while younger ones can help hold the pieces together or stuff the bauble.

Fill your bauble lightly with wadding or cotton through the gap, giving it a nice, fluffy shape.

Fold a piece of ribbon in half to create a loop. Insert it into the gap at the top of the bauble, holding it in place. Finish sewing the bauble shut, ensuring the ribbon is secure for hanging.

Tips for a Fun Family Crafting Session

  • Age-Appropriate Roles: Little ones can choose colours, decorate the felt, or stuff the baubles, while adults or older kids can handle cutting and sewing.

  • Play with Embellishments: Use child-safe glitter glue, sequins, or pom-poms to make each bauble extra festive.

  • Make It a Memory: Write the year or family member’s name on each bauble to create keepsakes you’ll cherish for years.

Why You'll Love This Craft

This felt bauble project is not only creative but also a wonderful opportunity to bond as a family. You’ll work together to make memories, decorations, and gifts all at once. Plus, it’s a great way for children to develop skills like creativity, patience, and fine motor coordination.
