Looking for a fun Halloween craft to get ready for a night of trick-or-treating? This easy paper witch hat project is just what you need!

My daughter was keen to dress up as a witch for Halloween this year. We already had a black dress and just needed some accessories. So instead of stressing and rushing to the shops we decided to have a fun craft session and make her a witch hat.

Follow along for step-by-step instructions to create your own and get into the Halloween spirit. With just a few materials and a bit of creativity, you can whip up a witch hat easily- perfect for kids and adults alike!

Ready to make some spooky magic? Let’s get started!

You'll need:

ree
  • 2 A4 sheets of black card

  • glue

  • scissors

  • pencil

  • a dismantled party hat or a print out of our template

  • elastic band or string

  • metallic pens (optional)

ree

On your first sheet of card transfer the shape of the party hat by using a dismantled party hat or our template.

ree

Cut out the shape of the party hat. Then cut a slit where the hat will be assembled and make two little holes for your string or elastic band.

ree

Optional: If you like you can decorate your hat with metallic pens.

ree

Assemble your cone.

ree

Cut a circle out of the second sheet of back card (in the size of a side plate).

ree

Place the cone in the middle of your circle and draw a line around it.

ree

Now cut a small circular hole in the middle of your circle. From that hole start cutting in the paper in 5 to 8mm strips. Cut just to the edge of the line you've just drawn around your cone and leave the rest intact.

ree

Fold the paper strips you've cut upright to a 90 degree angle.

ree

Now you can glue the paper strips into your cone to make the hat's rim. Leave to dry.

ree

Attach your elastic band or string to your hat.

Ready to spook! Happy crafting!
